How can we reduce the mortality of invasive pneumococcal disease?
نویسنده
چکیده
I n this issue of the European Respiratory Review, LUDWIG et al. [1] present an article highlighting the continuous burden caused by invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). Demographic changes due to the growing elderly population will further increase this problem. Bacterial infections of the upper and lower airways are most frequently caused by pneumococci in both adults and children, and pneumococci are an important cause of bacterial meningitis. Pneumococci carry a large armamentarium of pathogenesis factors enabling their translocation into the blood stream, i.e. bacteraemia, and which determine the amount of local tissue damage [2, 3]. These polygenic virulence capacities are the major cause of the high mortality of IPD. The mortality has not changed significantly in the past decades [4]. In addition to high mortality and morbidity, the IPD-induced healthcare costs are vast.

Clinical manifestations of invasive pneumococcal disease by vaccine and non-vaccine types.
Pneumococcal conjugated vaccines (PCVs) have shown protection against invasive pneumococcal disease by vaccine serotypes, but an increase in non-vaccine serotype disease has been observed. Type-specific effects on clinical manifestation need to be explored. Clinical data from 2096 adults and 192 children with invasive pneumococcal disease were correlated to pneumococcal molecular serotypes. Inv...

Pneumococcal disease can be divided into invasive disease, i.e. when bacteria are detected in normally sterile body fluids, and noninvasive disease. Pneumococcal disease occurs more frequently in younger children and older adults. It is estimated that, in 2050, 30.3% of the European population will be ≥65 yrs old, compared with 15.7% in 2000. Preventive medicine, including vaccination, is essen...

Background: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease which is characterized by B-cell abnormality and auto-antibody generation. Since bacterial infections are the most important causes of mortality in these patients, pneumococcal vaccination is recommended for children with SLE. Objective: To investigate humoral immunity and specific-antibody formation in response to a...

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide. Prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) with a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) is an effective approach to reduce the burden of pneumococcal disease. Nationwide epidemiological data is required prior to considering universal pneumococcal immunization for Indonesia. This preliminary st...
